Have you considered the convenience of “Hands-Free” lighting?
I personally use our home automation ALEXA to turn on and off some of our connected lighting fixtures.
- One of our lamps in the living room sits on an end table overlooking the stairs. We have connected it to ALEXA and asked her to turn “The Stair Light” on or off. This makes it easier for my husband and me to navigate to avoid any trips or falls down the stairs.
- Our Outdoor Kitchen Light works great to quickly brighten our backyard.
- When our pups go out to pee in the dark they head to the back fence as they know the light goes on (we have a Motion Light on the gate).
Below are a few examples of Motion Sensor lights:
(PS: I like the detachable torch light – great look and features!)

Home technology experts recommend the following types of motion-sensing lights for a senior who is aging in place: (Check out my AMAZON.ca List HERE to see items I found really cool!)
- Battery-powered Motion-sensing lights: These lights are easy to install and require no electrical wiring. They are also portable, making them ideal for use in areas where electrical outlets are not available. Battery-powered motion-sensing lights are perfect for closets, pantries, and other small spaces where light is needed for a short period.
- LED Motion-sensing lights: LED lights are energy-efficient and long-lasting. They are a great option for seniors who want to save money on energy bills and avoid the hassle of changing light bulbs frequently. LED motion-sensing lights can be used indoors or outdoors and are available in a variety of sizes and shapes.
- Smart Motion-sensing lights: Smart lights are a great option for seniors who want more control over their lighting. They can be controlled via smartphone or voice-activated assistants like Amazon Echo or Google Nest. Smart lights can also be programmed to turn on and off at specific times, making it easier for seniors to stick to a routine.
- Solar Motion-sensing lights: Solar-powered lights are ideal for seniors who want to save money on energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint. They are easy to install and require no electrical wiring. Solar motion-sensing lights are a great option for outdoor spaces like porches, decks, and patios.
It’s important to consider factors like ease of installation, energy efficiency, and your specific needs and preferences. It’s also a good idea to choose lights with adjustable sensitivity and timer settings to ensure they are customized to your (Boomer, Zoomer, Senior’s) needs.

Home Technology Experts recommend using battery-operated, wireless motion-sensing lights for a senior who is aging in place. Here are some reasons why:
- Easy installation: Wireless motion sensing lights are easy to install, as they do not require any wiring or electrical work. They can be mounted anywhere in the home, including hallways, staircases, and closets.
- Flexibility: Battery-operated motion-sensing lights are also flexible and can be easily moved or relocated as needed. This can be particularly helpful for seniors who may have changing mobility needs or who need to move around their home with mobility aids.
- Energy efficiency: Motion sensing lights are energy-efficient, as they only turn on when motion is detected, and automatically turn off after a set period of time. This can help seniors save on their energy bills while also providing a well-lit and safe home environment.
- Safety: Motion-sensing lights can help seniors avoid accidents or falls by illuminating their path in low-light conditions. They can also be a deterrent to intruders, providing an added layer of safety and security.
When I’m selecting motion-sensing lights for one of my client’s homes, I choose lights that have a wide detection range and a long battery life. I think it’s important to ensure lights are easy to operate and adjust, with simple settings and controls. Additionally, I like some models that have additional features like adjustable brightness levels, multiple modes of operation, and the ability to be controlled remotely.
